- Make your needs known. Good restaurants will accommodate your requests to grill rather than fry an entree, to serve lighter salad dressings, to serve sauces on the side, or to prepare a tomato based pasta dish even if it isn’t on the menu
- Watch out for those typical downfalls: butter on the bread, high fat appetizers like Caesar Salads or cream soups, deep fried entrees or rich desserts.
- Make trade offs: if you have a Caesar Salad, go light on the rest of the meal; or choose a very light meal so that you can enjoy one of the special desserts.
- Lower fat choices in fast food restaurants are sometimes hard to come by but these types of foods are better if available:
- a grilled rather than fried chicken sandwich
- a plain hamburger with lettuce and tomatoes rather than a burger with double patties, cheese, bacon and sauce.
- a vegetarian pizza rather than one with pepperoni, bacon and extra cheese.
- low fat milk, soy milk or juice instead of a milkshake
- low fat salad dressings rather than regular ones
- cereal or low fat muffins instead of an egg cheese bacon on buttered toast or croissant.
- submarines or sandwiches on whole wheat bread without the butter or mayonnaise.
- chili or bean based dishes.
