What's the best way to lose weight?

9 Dec 2006

  • Anyone who has tried to lose weight knows it’s not a simple process. What’s even harder is maintaining a healthy weight once the weight is lost. Success depends on learning to eat and to respond to food in healthy ways.
  • What seems to work best in the long run is a commitment to healthy eating and regular physical activity. This method involves hard work, and the progress is slow, but it does increase your chances of losing and maintaining the weight loss permanently.
  • Many diet plans such as high protein/low carbohydrate diet may offer quicker weight loss, but some are downright dangerous. What’s more, few people can stick with these unbalanced programs for long. While you cna lose weight, often very quickly, the loss is rarely maintained.

Keep Active

  • Becoming active is a critical part of weight loss, weight mainenance and healthy living in general.
  • Choose a physical activity that you can enjoy and can keep with. If you are currently inactive, don’t set yourself up for failure by taking on too much, too soon. Start slowly and work up to more activity
  • Walking is one of the easiest, most enjoyable and affordable activities, especially if you are overweight and unfit. All you need are good walking shoes and comfortable clothes
  • As you become more physically active, aim for 20 to 30 minutes of daily physical activity. In addition, think about other ways to include more activity into your routine.
